Emergency Care and Patient Resources
As we all know, life and accidents happen at any moment.
Wood Orthodontics is here to help with solutions for any potential problems that may occur during your care.
Though rare, orthodontic emergencies can occur, with some able to be managed at home and others requiring a trip to the office. The most common emergencies are a loose bracket or poking wire. In those cases, it’s best to not fidget with the piece to prevent further damage or pain.
Common Orthodontic Emergencies
Loose Brackets
Brackets whose glue has come loose will interfere with your treatment progress. Call us during our business hours to be seen as soon as possible for repair.
Shifted Wires
We always want to make sure you’re comfortable when leaving our office, but wires may begin to shift and poke during your treatment. While we provide an orthodontic care kit to clip wires and orthodontic wax to create a barrier, we are more than happy to cut and replace your wire as needed.
Lost Elastics
Call our office to see if you need the elastics to be replaced immediately or at your next appointment.
General Soreness
Rinse with warm salt water for any open sores and take over the counter medication for pain such as Tylenol or Advil.
Healthy Habits for Braces & Clear Aligners
Foods to Avoid
Proper Nutrition is important to your overall health but mild alterations might be needed when receiving orthodontic care to avoid foods that can get stuck, loosen or break off brackets, or undo the pressure placed on brackets.
- Ice
- Popcorn
- Corn on the cob
- Nuts of any kind
- Hard candies
- Taffy, caramel, and other sticky candy
- Raw vegetables
- Whole apples
- Any other hard, crunchy, tough, or chewy foods that could break off brackets
Recommended Foods
- Tender meats
- Cooked vegetables
- Most fruits and berries
- Soft foods
- Soft breads
- Cheese
- ICE CREAM!
Caring for Braces
Oral hygiene is important to your overall health whether you have braces or not. Our recommendation for keeping up with your brushing is using an electric toothbrush and a timer set to 2 minutes. When asked to stop brushing when it feels like it’s been 2 minutes, most people stop brushing after only 45 seconds, so don’t fall short in your oral hygiene!
As for braces, make sure to brush around the brackets, under the wire, and on the gums.
Eating Tips
Clear aligners get worn down if you are not removing them before eating or drinking anything other than water. As a good habit, brush your teeth (or at least rinse really well) before replacing the aligners. We want to avoid risks of staining and cavities, and eating or drinking can introduce sugars onto the aligners which your teeth sit in for the rest of the day.
Caring for Clear Aligners
Brushing your teeth is a lot easier with clear aligners, but did you know you also need to brush your aligners? You don’t want to put bacteria back on your teeth after you’ve cleaned them!
Brush your aligners with a dish soap or soft hand soap and DO NOT USE TOOTHPASTE. The microabrasives in toothpaste are great for scrubbing plaque off of your teeth but are too harsh for aligners, making them look cloudy and introducing scratches that can harbor harmful bacteria.
